Message by Geba Project participant – Mitch Mahaffey

I recently heard an evangelist state that if your church family disappeared, would the community around you notice?

It challenged me because I would have to say no to that question about my church and youth group.

So we started the Geba Project. We have found that social work and evangelism go hand in hand but without one or the other it becomes impossible to make a lasting impact in the community.

For example: if you just do social work, it is in vain for you may feed a hungry person but you forfeit his soul. What good is it if a man gains the whole world but looses his soul?

This impacted me as well as the following points. Jesus is the ultimate evangelist. He preached in the small towns not just the big ones where he got the biggest crowd, which showed that his love is for every soul to find rest in Him.

He also shared the gospel everywhere He went as we should. He had compassion even on the bum in the gutter. God orders us to pray for workers (Matthew 9:37-38). Jesus said to His disciples, “The Harvest is huge but the workers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest that he would send forth workers into his harvest.” The harvest is the world and the workers are the faithful Christians and it clearly commands us to pray for more missos and chappies to do God’s work, which is most important!

But how can we pray for someone to tell them about Jesus Christ if we cannot ourselves? This is hypocritical. I have to work on this myself.

Matthew 12:30 says, “Anyone who is not with me is against me. Anyone who does not gather sheep with me scatters them.” Are we as a church gathering sheep with Christ or scattering them?

The bible says those who go into ministry will be judged harsher then others. Matthew 10:22 states that everyone will hate you because of me. But anyone who stands firm to the end will be saved. What a promise! Have I counted the costs of serving our Savior radically? Have I?

In the end make sure in your God given ministry that God gets the Glory! This is service!
